Travel Guide: Brisbane on a Budget

Travel Guide: Brisbane on a Budget
Queensland has a lot to offer its tourist but nowhere gives more than Brisbane. There are so many ways you can spend your day and if you are heading there for a day trip, you’ll need some great ideas of where you can eat, drink and soak up a little culture along the way. Brisbane’s subtropical climate means spending time in the great outdoors is an absolute must, whether it’s exploring the river or the many parks. Scour the antique shops or visit a venue for live music.

No matter what you want to do, Brisbane has a lot to offer, and it doesn’t have to cost you the earth, either! Brisbane may be the best place to go for business, but if you’re looking for some free activities in the city, then you need to check out our top Brisbane on a budget ideas:

1. Head to the beach

Yes, the beach! Streets Beach is located in the South Bank, and is a huge lagoon perfect for those who want to go for a dip in the middle of the city. While you’re not far from a beach from Brisbane, sometimes you just need a cool drop in the water while you’re sweltering.

2. Head to QAGOMA

The Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art are two of the most visited galleries in the city – and for good reason. Showcasing world-class exhibits that are free to attend means that you and the family can soak in the culture while you’re whiling away the hours.

3. Catch the CityHopper

If you’re going to travel down the river to find the perfect lunch spot, why not catch the CityHopper? The little red boats that sail up and down the river are free to use, meaning you can hop off and stroll into town to tuck into a delicious Bulimba breakfast, and while you’re at it stop at the beautiful City Botanical Gardens.

4. Visit the Farmer's Market

Brisbane is famed for many things, and one of these is the many farmers’ markets. Fresh flowers, meat and artisan goods mean you can meander on through the markets and try out free samples of delicious food.

5. Enjoy live music within the city

Did you know that Brisbane is the home of the largest live music program in Australia? We did! Local bands and those that are touring the city come and perform live on stage. You can take a look here to see what’s coming up but you can go and see the, perform for free, which makes for a fantastic day out!

6. Visit the Daisy Hill Koala Centre

Animal fans will love the Daisy Hill Koala Centre in the south of Brisbane. You can see the koalas in their natural habitat, learn all about them and get in for free. You can learn so much about these marsupials before heading to the next free place in the city.

Brisbane caters for all ages, tastes and interests so no matter how many people are in your party, you’ll always have a full day of fun!

  1. Brisbane is my home town but I haven't lived there for almost 10 years! Great ideas on things to see and do! I also recommend exploring Fortitude Valley like around James Street to browse the shops and stop for a light lunch. It's also lovely to go for a walk around the river (you can do a loop from the city to South Bank) and you can stop in at the city botanic gardens along the way.

  2. I thought you were in Brisbane, Janine! Derick and I haven't fully explored Brisbane when we were there. Most of the attractions kay naa sa Gold Coast where we stayed for 3 weeks. Hopefully we can visit Australia again.
